Residential Hospice in Moncton
MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government is investing more than $1 million in the creation of a 10-bed residential hospice in Moncton.
“Providing palliative care is an important component of our health-care system,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers. “With this investment, Hospice Greater Moncton will be able to provide quality care and support to people and their families at the end of their life.”
Rogers spoke on behalf of Health Minister Benoît Bourque.
“When Hospice Greater Moncton was founded in 2004 by Jack Cameron and the first board of directors, their long-term goal was to create a residential hospice to assist families as their loved ones approached ‘the end of the journey,’” said hospice board chair Dennis Cochrane. “This announcement today brings that goal within reach. The provision of clinical services is a major component of a residential hospice, and Hospice Greater Moncton will now focus on building the facility so that residents of southeastern New Brunswick can access these clinical services in a comfortable home-like and caring environment. We will not be just constructing a building, but will be creating a home.”
An investment of up to $1,082,264 over two years will go toward establishing a clinical care team, including the hiring of an on-site licensed practical nurse and personal support workers who will be supported by the Extra-Mural Program interdisciplinary team.
Beginning in the fall of 2019, Hospice Greater Moncton will support the needs of palliative care patients and their families through hospice day programs, outreach programs and a residential facility for end-of-life and palliative respite care services. Services will be available in both official languages.
Construction on the facility is expected to start next spring, with an anticipated opening in late fall of the same year.
Supporting those in need of palliative care is part of the New Brunswick Family Plan framework. The framework aims to improve the lives of all residents by addressing the factors that have the greatest impact upon health and well-being. It focuses government action in seven priority areas: improving access to primary and acute care; promoting wellness; supporting people with addictions and mental health challenges; fostering healthy aging and support for seniors; advancing women’s equality; reducing poverty; and supporting people with disabilities.
